Come and Get It (1936) Laserdisc
Come and Get It (1936) is a powerful drama set against the backdrop of Wisconsin’s booming lumber industry, directed by Howard Hawks (with William Wyler completing filming). Edward Arnold delivers a compelling performance as Barney Glasgow, an ambitious lumberjack who forsakes his true love, saloon singer Lotta Morgan (Frances Farmer), to marry into wealth. Two decades later, Barney finds himself drawn to Lotta’s daughter—also played by Farmer—sparking a dramatic love triangle with his son Richard (Joel McCrea). Walter Brennan, as Barney’s loyal friend Swan Bostrom, won the first-ever Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his heartfelt portrayal. The film explores themes of ambition, regret, and generational conflict, enhanced by strong performances, lush visuals, and a sweeping story adapted from Edna Ferber’s novel.
