Mortal Kombat is a fighting game released for the Super Nintendo in 1993, based on the arcade hit. The game features seven playable fighters, including Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, and Johnny Cage, each with unique special moves. Players battle through a tournament hosted by the sorcerer Shang Tsung, fighting opponents one-on-one in best-of-three matches. The SNES version is infamous for its censorship, replacing the arcade's blood with sweat and altering the violent Fatalities to be less graphic. Despite this, the game retained its fast-paced combat and digitized character sprites, offering a solid, though less brutal, home adaptation. While it was criticized for its toned-down violence compared to the Sega Genesis version, Mortal Kombat still became a defining title in the fighting game genre.
